5 Unique Ways To Celebrate The Summer Solstice

Posted by

Here in the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. Why not embrace the sunlight and celebrate summer vibes with a celebration this June 21? There are lots of traditions around the world that mark the event — making flower wreaths, practicing yoga, and burning scarecrows to name a few — but here five of our favorite, most manageable ways that you can celebrate the Summer Solstice in Milwaukee this year.

Host a barbecue

Who doesn’t love an excuse to have friends and family over for good meat, grilled veggies, and cold drinks? This could end up being one of your favorite barbecues of the summer, even if it’s only a couple weeks before Independence Day.

Decorate with summer flowers from your local flower shop, and enjoy the time spent with loved ones outside and in the sun. Summer Solstice celebrations are often marked by bonfires, so why not go ahead and have a fire when it finally gets dark?

Take a hike

It’s the longest day of the year! Take advantage of the extra sunlight and be outside in nature. Bring friends and family along with you and make a picnic out of it. You’re sure to enjoy the surplus sunlight, and it’s always fun to give an ordinary hike a little flair by doing it for a special event.

Send flowers to friends

Do you have a friend who worships the sun? Is there someone who has been on your mind lately? Someone you could send flowers to just because? The Summer Solstice is a great excuse to order flowers online for someone you love. Your friend or family member will love having a floral arrangement sent to their door. There’s no better way to share love and celebration with others than by sending flowers from a local flower shop.

Take a trip

Can’t get enough of the sun? Take a trip somewhere that truly celebrates the Summer Solstice. Reykjavik, Iceland, has the Secret Solstice Music Festival; Stonehenge has a festival and you can see the sun rise perfectly aligned with the stone structure; or Times Square in New York City is transformed into a day-long yoga event.

If you’re not quite ready for a festival-style celebration, simply travel farther north and soak in all the sun you can.

Start a garden

What better time of the year to show your gratitude for Earth by planting a garden? Get your soil ready and choose plants from your local garden shop or cuttings from friends’ gardens. You could even order flowers or plants online that you then incorporate into your garden or backyard.

The best part? You’ll have plenty of sun to stay out late planting your garden, getting everything done, and enjoying the light.
