Rose Care Tips

I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck. – Emma Goldman

In honor of National Rose Month, we’ve been blogging about our favorite flower – roses! Fresh-cut roses are meant to be enjoyed—maximize their life by following these simple tips.

1)   Cut stems before placing them into a vase. If you purchase loose flowers, you’ll need to cut them before placing them in water. Cut stems with a sharp knife at an angle. this way will help the flowers to absorb the greatest amount of water. Don’t use a scissors--they pinch the stem, damaging the follicles. Place stems in water within five seconds of cutting to prevent air pockets (which inhibit the stem’s ability to take in water).

2)   Change the water daily and add flower food. Change the water daily to prevent bacteria growth. Add in some flower food – if you don’t have any, you can use 2 TB of sugar and 1 TB of vinegar. Cut the stems before returning the flowers to the water.

3)   Peel outer petals as they bloom out. As the rose begins to bloom, the petals will expand out. Take away the “bloomed out” petals to reveal the fresher ones beneath.

4)   Keep the flowers in a cool area. Keep roses in a cool spot to maximize life. Sun and heat will cause the flowers to bloom more quickly.
